The Hayward Northstar is a well-built pump that stays in service a long time — which is exactly why ordering parts for one is confusing. Hayward revised the internals more than once, and the model number alone does not tell you which version you have.
Two versions, two kits
The dividing line is production date, not model number.
2008 and later
Uses shaft seal SPX4000SA2, also listed as SP4000, SP4000X, SP3200EE, SP3200X, SP3600 and SPX3200SA. Lid o-ring is SPX4000S.
Hayward Northstar (2008 and Later) Rebuild Kit
Contents: seal plate o-ring SPX4000T, drain plug o-rings (2), lid o-ring SPX4000S, diffuser o-ring SPX4000Z1, shaft seal SPX4000SA2, lubricant, instructions.
Confirmed fitment: SP4005(NS), SP4007(NS), SP4010(NS), SP4015(NS), SP4020(NS).
Prior to 2003
Different shaft seal — SPX1600Z2 — and a different lid o-ring, CX400G.
Hayward Northstar (Prior 2003) Rebuild Kit
Contents: seal plate o-ring SPX4000T, drain plug o-rings (2), lid o-ring CX400G, diffuser and pump union o-rings (3) SPX4000Z1, shaft seal SPX1600Z2, lubricant, instructions.
Important: if the impeller on a pre-2003 pump has been replaced at any point, the seal in the prior-2003 kit may not be compatible — a newer impeller usually means a newer seal. If you don't know the pump's service history, send us the model number and a photo of the seal plate before ordering.
The shaft seal is the urgent one
Water appearing between the motor and the wet end is the shaft seal, and it feeds straight into the motor bearing. See our shaft seal diagnosis guide if you're not certain that's what you have.
Before you reassemble
Every o-ring in these kits seats better and lasts longer with a food-grade silicone lubricant. Dry o-rings pinch, twist and take a set, which is how a brand-new seal starts weeping within a season.
Aqua Flex Food Grade Silicone Lubricant is what ships in our kits. Apply it to o-rings only — never to the polished faces of a mechanical shaft seal. Lubricant on the carbon or ceramic makes the seal slip, overheat and leak.
