Hayward PowerFlo Matrix Parts Guide: SP1591, SP1592, SP1593 and W3 Models

The Hayward PowerFlo Matrix is one of the most common above-ground pool pumps in North America, and the model number stamped on the motor plate matters more than most people expect. The Matrix family covers several horsepower ratings and two cord styles, and the parts are not interchangeable across every variant.

Identifying your PowerFlo Matrix model

Find the label on the motor. You are looking for a number beginning SP159 or W3SP159. The W3 prefix simply indicates a later production run sold through a different channel — the wet end is the same.

  • SP1591 / SP1591TL — 0.75 HP. The TL suffix denotes a twist-lock cord rather than a standard plug.
  • SP1592 / W3SP1592 — 1.0 HP (0.85 total HP), single speed, standard cord.
  • SP15922S / W3SP15922S — 1.0 HP two-speed, with a switch on the motor.
  • SP1593 / W3SP1593 — 1.5 HP (1.1 total HP), high-flow single speed.
  • SP15932S / W3SP15932S — 1.5 HP two-speed.
  • SP1592TL / SP1593TL — twist-lock cord versions of the above.

The four seals that fail

Almost every PowerFlo Matrix leak traces to one of four parts.

Strainer cover o-ring — SPX5500H

The large o-ring under the clear lid. If you are losing prime, seeing air bubbles in the strainer basket, or water weeping from the lid seam, start here. This is the most frequently replaced part on the pump and the cheapest.

Strainer housing o-ring — SPX5500K

Seals the strainer pot to the volute. A failure here usually shows as a steady drip underneath the pump body rather than at the lid.

Housing o-ring — SPX0710XZ5

Seals the volute to the seal plate. This one leaks when the pump has been apart before and the o-ring was reused or pinched on reassembly.

Shaft seal — SPX1500KA

This is the one that matters. The shaft seal sits where the motor shaft enters the wet end. When it fails, water runs down the shaft and into the motor bearings — and the motor is by far the most expensive part of the pump. Water dripping between the motor and the pump body is a shaft seal, and it should be treated as urgent. A five-dollar seal replaced this week prevents a two-hundred-dollar motor next month.

Do them all at once

Once the pump is apart, replacing one o-ring and reusing the rest is a false economy. Every seal in the pump has seen the same chlorine, heat and hours. Our rebuild kit contains all of them plus lubricant and instructions.

If you have an SP1591 or SP1591TL, contact us before ordering — the 0.75 HP variant is not on the confirmed fitment list for this kit and we would rather check than guess.

Not the Matrix?

The Hayward Power-Flo LX is a different pump with different part numbers despite the similar name. If your model plate reads SP1580, SP1580H, SP1580TL, SP1580X15, W3SP1580 or W3SP1580X15, you need the Power-Flo LX SP1580 Series kit instead.

Before you reassemble

Every o-ring in these kits seats better and lasts longer with a food-grade silicone lubricant. Dry o-rings pinch, twist and take a set, which is how a brand-new seal starts weeping within a season. A thin film is all you need.

Aqua Flex Food Grade Silicone Lubricant is what we use and what ships in our kits. Apply it to o-rings only — never to the polished faces of a mechanical shaft seal. Those faces need to run dry and clean against each other, and lubricant on the carbon or ceramic will cause the seal to slip, overheat and leak.
