Keeping spares is good practice, particularly for equipment that fails at inconvenient moments. But elastomers age whether or not they are installed, and a badly stored spare can fail on first use.
What actually damages a stored o-ring
Ozone
The most underestimated one. Ozone attacks the double bonds in many elastomers and produces fine surface cracking. Electric motors and welding equipment generate it. Do not store o-rings near a running motor.
Ultraviolet light
Sunlight and fluorescent lighting both degrade rubber. Store in opaque packaging or a closed drawer.
Heat
Rate of ageing roughly doubles for every 18°F rise. A shelf above a heater is a poor choice; a cool cupboard is a good one.
Deformation
This is the one people get wrong most often. Never hang o-rings on nails or hooks. Stretching them over a peg for months causes permanent deformation, and large-diameter rings are especially vulnerable. Store them flat and relaxed in their bags.
Contact with the wrong things
Keep rings away from petroleum greases unless the material tolerates them, and away from copper and manganese, which catalyse degradation in some elastomers.
Realistic shelf life
Stored properly — cool, dark, sealed, relaxed — the common materials keep well:
- Buna-N nitrile — good for several years; ozone is its weak point.
- EPDM — excellent ozone and UV resistance, so it stores particularly well.
- FKM fluorocarbon — very stable in storage.
- Silicone — stable, but easily damaged physically, so protect it from being crushed.
Check before you fit
Whatever the date on the bag, inspect a stored ring before installing it:
- Squeeze it. It should feel supple and spring back. Hard or stiff means discard it.
- Stretch it gently and look for fine cracking — classic ozone attack.
- Look at the cross-section. Flat spots mean it has been stored deformed.
- Check the surface for chalkiness or tackiness. Either is a bad sign.
Practical advice
Keep spares in their original sealed bags, in a labelled box, in a cool dark cupboard away from motors. That is the whole method, and it is enough.
