Spa and hot tub pumps live a harder life than pool pumps. Higher water temperature, far more start-stop cycles, and heavier chemical loading in a much smaller volume of water. The shaft seal absorbs all of that.
Why heat matters so much
A pool pump moves water at ambient temperature. A spa pump circulates water at 100°F or more, continuously, often on a duty cycle that means many starts per day.
Every start is the moment of maximum wear on a mechanical seal — before the fluid film establishes between the faces, they run essentially dry for an instant. A spa pump cycling several times a day accumulates that wear far faster than a pool pump running one long cycle.
Symptoms specific to spas
- Water under the equipment bay. Often the first sign, and often blamed on plumbing unions.
- A whine or growl that changes with speed. The bearing is already taking water.
- Rust staining below the motor. The seal has been leaking longer than you realised.
- Repeated GFCI trips. Water reaching the motor windings. Stop using the spa and address it.
That last one is a safety issue, not a maintenance one.
Finding your seal
Jacuzzi pump seals carry numbers such as 10-1436-00, 10-1390-04, 10-120, 10-486, 10-477 and 5RP. We list them by that number, so you can search directly rather than measuring.

Our spa coverage runs well beyond Jacuzzi — several hundred spa and hot tub parts across the major pump manufacturers. If your number is not listed, send us the pump make and model.
Fitting it properly
The rules are the same as any carbon/ceramic seal, and one of them is counter-intuitive: lubricate the rubber, never the faces. Silicone on the carbon or ceramic makes them slip and the seal leaks from new.
Full detail in why mechanical shaft seals fail, including how to read the old part to find out what went wrong.
Before you reassemble

Seat every o-ring with a thin film of food-grade silicone. Dry rings pinch, twist and take a set — the usual reason a brand-new seal weeps within a season. Aqua Flex Food Grade Silicone Lubricant is what ships in our kits.
O-rings only. Never lubricate the polished faces of a mechanical shaft seal.
