Silicon Carbide or Carbon/Ceramic? Choosing Seal Face Materials

Silicon Carbide or Carbon/Ceramic? Choosing Seal Face Materials

Most mechanical shaft seals pair a carbon rotating face with a ceramic stationary seat. It is an excellent combination: carbon is self-lubricating, ceramic is hard and cheap, and together they handle clean water indefinitely.

There are conditions where that pairing is the wrong answer.

Silicon carbide mechanical shaft seal

Carbon/ceramic: the default

Strengths: self-lubricating carbon tolerates brief marginal lubrication; low cost; excellent in clean water; forgiving on installation.

Weaknesses: carbon is soft, so abrasives destroy it; ceramic is brittle and chips if cocked or if the pump cavitates; poor dry-running tolerance.

Silicon carbide: the upgrade

Strengths: extremely hard, so abrasives have far less effect; excellent thermal conductivity, which means it survives marginal lubrication better; strong chemical resistance.

Weaknesses: higher cost; less forgiving of misalignment; no self-lubrication, so a truly dry start is still damaging.

When the upgrade is worth it

  • Abrasive service — sandy or silty water, slurry, wastewater with solids. This is the strongest case, and the payback is quick.
  • Repeated dry-running risk — self-priming pumps, intermittent dewatering, anywhere suction is unreliable.
  • Chemical duty beyond what carbon tolerates.
  • High-value downtime — where the cost of a failure dwarfs the cost of the seal.

When it is not

Clean water at moderate temperature, well-primed, with reliable suction. Pool pumps, spa pumps, domestic water systems and most HVAC circulators are served perfectly well by carbon/ceramic, and paying more buys nothing.

Read the old seal first

If the carbon face came out scored with radial scratches, abrasives got in and silicon carbide is worth considering. If it came out evenly worn and smooth, the seal simply reached the end of its life and a like-for-like replacement is correct.

Before you reassemble

Aqua Flex food grade silicone lubricant

Seat every o-ring with a thin film of food-grade silicone. Dry rings pinch and take a set. Aqua Flex Food Grade Silicone Lubricant is what ships in our kits.

O-rings only. Never lubricate the polished faces of a mechanical shaft seal.
